SEO Squeeze #63: Low-Hanging Fruit You'll Want to Grab
One quick thing you can do to better your SEO today.
How to find low hanging fruit
Let's talk about low-hanging fruit 🍊
Not the kind in your fridge—the kind in your Google Search Console.
Low-hanging fruit keywords are search terms you're already kinda ranking for—usually sitting on page 2 or the bottom of page 1. With a little nudge (like an internal link or content refresh), you could bump them up to the top!
So how do you find them?
Open up Google Search Console
Head to Performance → Search Results
At the top, turn on the "average position" metric (you'll see a little orange line appear!)
Click on the Impressions column to sort by highest
Then scroll until you see keywords in the #10–20 range
Remember, Google shows 10-ish results per page. So positions 10–20 = Page 2.
These are your easiest opportunities to win more traffic—because you're already halfway there.
Peek below and you'll see that “seo tools for small business” is a great low hanging fruit opportunity for our website.
Now what do you do?
First you have to identify what content you have that is supporting this keyword. For example we have a couple:
https://duocollective.com/blog/seo-keyword-research-tools (the post that gets the most impressions)
https://duocollective.com/blog/seo-tools-for-small-businesses (this was a backlink)
https://duocollective.com/blog/seo-tools-for-small-businesses-we-use-and-love (this is a podcast episode)
— side note I would argue the last two posts might have some opportunities to be combined to ensure we don't get flagged for duplicate content. Sometimes we uncover things like this when searching for something else. 🤪
Now that I know what the pages are, here are a few bite-sized tweaks that could make a quick, yet powerful, difference.
Add internal links to this page from other relevant blog posts or pages
Naturally mention the keyword in your H1, intro, or section headings (if not already there)
Expand the content—add a short FAQ, a how-to tip, or a real-life example
Include images with alt text that references the keyword
Update the post's publish date (if it's relevant) to signal freshness
Even just one or two of these can nudge you up a few spots—which could mean way more eyes on your business 👀
Happy optimizing, friend!
